Coach Doug Pederson spent part of his Tuesday morning watching the playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints from the 2013 season.

It was less about advance scouting — the Eagles will play either the Saints, Carolina Panthers or Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round depending on how wild-card weekend shakes out — and more about examining how the offense operated under Nick Foles.

After a couple down performances, Pederson and the coaching staff are using the bye week to look at old Foles film in order to properly tailor the current system to fit his strengths. Pederson has already checked out tape from Foles’ time in Philly under Andy Reid, his days with the St. Louis Rams and, of course, his two years under Chip Kelly.

This is a familiar question in the playoff era and one that has not been answered to the satisfaction of teams from the Group of 5. It’s not so much about making the top four, but the feeling that leagues such as the AAC are not being properly valued. The glass ceiling has been set, much to the detriment of teams like UCF.

The Knights’ biggest downfall this year was not its conference affiliation. It was the fact it played only one ranked opponent all season — No. 20 Memphis in the AAC title game. Also, one of its two games against a Power 5 opponent (Georgia Tech) was canceled because of Hurricane Irma.

“Nothing I say is going to make a difference,” Jackson said.

On the field, Jackson said he expects Josh Gordon to stay and “be a contributing member” of the team, and DeShone Kizer definitely will be in the quarterback competition for 2018.

And though he did not firmly commit to hiring an offensive coordinator, Jackson all but said he would — and give the new person playcalling responsibilities.

“I have said before that at some point in time I would like to do [that] differently because I think it is important to coach the team,” Jackson said.

Trevor Siemian injury update: Broncos QB to have second shoulder surgery

Jan

Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian is still having trouble with his shoulder.

Siemian will undergo surgery Wednesday for the second time in two consecutive seasons, but this time the surgery is a “different deal,” even though it’s the same shoulder he had repaired last season.

The latest surgery brings into question whether Siemian will be healthy enough to return as the starting quarterback in 2018. He started 10 games this season after winning back-to-back training camp battles for the starting job, but the Broncos (5-11) have also seen a struggling offense.

With only one year remaining on his current contract, Umberger admitted himself that he was expecting to be bought out this offseason. You would hope you’re at the stage of your career when you’ve done enough to shut these guys up, he added, but there’s always going to be haters.A flying saucer crashed the Mojave Desert and its inhabitants turned out to be alien slaves, bred to be super intelligent and strong, and controllable by their Overseers. At Rutgers, he earned consecutive First- All-Big East honors .Definitely still seems like NHL caliber player who is probably taking advantage of opportunity to play overseas, find some stability for the and then increase his value the NHL after his is done. The group was filmed eating shawarma and falafel the Mahane Yehuda market; visiting Yad Vashem; listening to a recording of -Gurion’s declaration of independence Tel Aviv; attending a groundbreaking ceremony for a new baseball field to be built Beit Shemesh; visiting the Wall on Friday night; swimming the Dead Sea; climbing Masada; taking air force base; and dedicating a medical motorcycle for the volunteer emergency medical service, Hatzalah. We are thrilled to launch live streaming of our Chicago White Sox and Cubs telecasts beginning this MLB , Bedella, vice president general manager of CSN Chicago, said a statement.

Jeter is being crushed in Miami, with former Marlins president David Samson — whom Jeter fired — piling on.

“Maybe he has a plan,” Samson told Dan Le Batard and Jon Weiner on Miami’s 790 The Ticket. “I just can’t figure out what it is.”

Both teams were on byes last week, and both know what their tasks are. The Panthers are chasing one of the NFL’s hottest teams in the Saints, in their division. The Jets are somehow on the fringe of the playoff hunt but have a brutal finish to their schedule (Chiefs, Saints, Patriots in final five weeks). The Panthers’ defense is going to pin its ears back on Josh McCown; the Jets will do the same to Cam Newton, but to much lesser effect.

Meanwhile, as Jackson said of his team after the Packers loss, “That was the best version of us as a football team, offense, defense, special teams — up until the fourth quarter, when we needed it the most.”

They’re somewhat empty words, since they’re still winless and still 1-for-Jackson’s-Browns-career. But not totally empty.

There are still tons of players in Cleveland who Brown brought in during his brief stint, who can contribute to winning with time and patience. They also have 12 picks in what will now be Dorsey’s first draft, courtesy of Brown’s deals.

The Bengals might be looking to shake things up at quarterback, but if they stand pat and look to make a playoff push in 2018 with Andy Dalton, adding to their offensive line and secondary are the two most important objectives.

They cut rookie Younghoe Koo after he was just 3 of 6 in four games. The Chargers lost two of those games by two points and another by three. Davon House, CB, Green Bay Packers: He came into the game with a shoulder injury and was a surprise active despite being declared doubtful on the injury report. He was quickly declared out for the duration of the game because of a back injury.

On Monday, the team confirmed that House will not need surgery for his transverse process fracture, and that he could return this season.

Taylor on beating the Chiefs in Kansas City: “Not that this matters, but 17 out of 19 people didn’t pick us to win this one. We like those underdog feelings.”

Tomlin on facing the Patriots on Dec. 17: “I’m going to embrace the elephant in the room. Going to be fireworks. And it’s probably going to be Part 1. That’s going to be a big game. But probably, if we’re both doing what we’re supposed to, the second one is really going to be a big game. Then what happens in the first is going to set up the second one, which is going to determine the location of the second one.”

On the third play of overtime, DeShone Kizer threw an inexplicable pass that was picked off by Josh Jones. While any bettors who took the Browns at +3.5 or higher would have still covered with a Green Bay field goal, all Cleveland supporters would become losers after another touchdown by Adams — this time coming on a 25-yard play to end the game.

The Jaguars usually prey on one-dimensional passing teams, because it allows their “Sacksonville” pass rush to pin its ears back and take over, setting up takeaways for their talented secondary. They are bound to make some big pressure plays on the Seahawks, but Seattle can make it equally ugly on Leonard Fournette and Blake Bortles. At the end of the game, Seattle has the one player to pretty it all up on a field-goal drive: Russell Wilson.chargers_001-180x180

They’ve also had a lot of “crossover film” this season with six common opponents.

“He’s been tremendous this year,” Goff said of Wentz. “Everything he’s been doing, especially his ability to extend plays and make plays outside the pocket. I know that’s always something he was always really good at and is continuing to get really good at. A lot of respect for him and what he’s done.

“He’s one guy who has really worked his way into everything he’s earned. He’s deserved everything he’s earned up to this point and expecting him to continue to keep getting better. He’s a really fun guy to watch.”

Wentz, the second overall pick from North Dakota State, got off to a fast start as a rookie before trailing off and finishing with 3,782 passing yards and 16 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. He’s an MVP candidate this year as the Eagles (10-2) can clinch the NFC East with a win.

“It’s small things. It’s one thing here or there that’s off and you have to have everybody dancing the same dance. The best way to do that is to go back to your fundamentals and what you believe in and put a little more focus on it. Whether you’re a coach or a player it’s the same deal.”

No suspensions expected from Seahawks-Jaguars melee

Dec
23

The NFL is still investigating what transpired at the end of Sunday’s game between the Seahawks and Jaguars, but no suspensions are expected.

The Jaguars released a statement Monday, saying once they identify they fans who threw objects onto the field, they will be banned from attending future Jaguars games.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for running onto the field, said following the loss if was “unfortunate” how the game ended.

“I really don’t like the way the game ended,” Carroll told reporters Monday. “The level that we play at, that’s not an excuse for going over the top like that. All these guys have heard that and they understand that and we don’t ever want to look like that.”

Jacksonville will win the AFC South — The Titans were quite possibly the worst 8-4 team entering Sunday’s game against the lowly Cardinals in recent memory. Tennessee had had a cake schedule of late, but haven’t been impressive in any of their wins. Sunday’s game marked the third in a row they’ve faced backup QBs and Blaine Gabbert was able to beat them. While Tennessee (8-5) beat the Jaguars in Week 2, they won’t beat them again in the final regular season game, a matchup where Jacksonville can not only clinch the division, but knock their rivals out of the playoffs.

Within a few days, while undergoing treatment for head, neck and shoulder injuries, Scott realized it was the end of a major league career that began in 1985 and included three World Series assignments, three All-Star Games and 91 postseason games.

“In fact, it was pretty easy,” he said. “I wasn’t planning on this year being the last one. But I thought, this is a sign.”panthers_100

That means Green Bay should be thrilled New Orleans beat Carolina in Week 13.

The Packers are set to play the 8-4 Panthers in Week 15, making it a critical time for Rodgers’ return. The Packers already lost to the Falcons in Week 2 with Rodgers.

“At no point in time in my coaching career [has] there anything more important to me than the safety of our players,” O’Brien said. “I love our players, and I care about them. And I cannot stand when players get injured.

“Anybody that’s been on the sideline of a football game knows that from a coaching standpoint, you really can’t see things like that, especially when the ball is in certain areas of the field.”

Savage is still in the concussion protocol, and O’Brien said he expects T.J. Yates to start at quarterback on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yates was 14-of-26 for 175 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Savage on Sunday.

Lack of a run game will cost the Lions a playoff berth — Detroit’s rushing woes are now four years old. The Lions have not have a 100-yard rusher since Reggie Bush went over the century mark on Nov. 28, 2013. While the Lions have a favorable schedule, they lost to the Panthers and Falcons earlier this season and those two teams currently hold the wild-card spots.

No one knows for certain how much is wagered on sports each year in the U.S., from Vegas books to corner bar parlay card players to offshore sites, but consider this: In 2015, the American Gaming Association estimated that Americans would bet $93 billion that season just on NFL and college football games. Other estimates say U.S. bettors illegally wager up to $380 billion a year.

Colin Kaepernick a finalist for Time’s 2017 Person of the Year

Dec
15

Colin Kaepernick, Time’s 2017 Person of the Year?

That is a distinct possibilty, as the magazine announced Monday on NBC’s “Today” show that Kaepernick is one of 10 finalists for its prestigious annual honor.

Other finalists for the honor are Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Dreamers, the undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. with their parents but may be forced to leave under proposed new federal guidelines.

There’s a misconception among many people that the honor is bestowed upon the person who has made the greatest contributions to society during the year, but as Time’s editors point out in the media release, the honor recognizes, “the person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year, for better or for worse.”

Past winners include 13 different U.S. presidents, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Adolf Hitler, The Computer and Mahatma Gandhi.

On Tuesday, smoke and ash filled the air but conditions were “clear and breezy” Wednesday at the Ventura County facility, according to the Times, as the Rams went about their typical work week with an extended walk-through.

Coach Sean McVay said the Rams have arranged to practice at USC, some 50 miles to the southeast, in the coming days if air quality deteriorates to the point that it’s unhealthy for players to practice.

But McVay said Wednesday that he expected “we’ll be able to go about our normal operating procedure and be out there” in a normal game-week routine at the team’s facility.

However, emergency officials warned that powerful winds Thursday could feed the wildfires.panthers_012

Cameroonian-Martiniquan defensive end Yannick Ngakoue recorded a multi sack game.

“I think it’s a worthy attempt,” said Gaudelli, via ESPN. “Because, look, football essentially has been covered the same way from the first day it was covered. Yes, we’ve added cameras. We’ve added technology. We’ve added all those things. But the game itself has been covered a certain way, and I think this is a chance to slightly break away from that and give people a different production to evaluate and see if they like it or not.”

So NBC’s experiment Thursday night could be the beginning of a massive change in the way TV networks cover live sports, football in particular. After all, a generation that has grown accustomed to and appreciative of the camera angle via video games is the generation networks want to target.

Much has been made of the NFL’s sagging TV ratings, a trend that has continued in 2017. It would be wild if a simple tweak like a new camera angle became the method of rejuvenation.

What’s left on the schedule isn’t too difficult, save for Pittsburgh and the final two weeks. The problem: Looking at the Titans’ positive numbers, down to their plus-1 turnover margin, there’s nothing that stands out. They are good at the coach-speak basics of running the ball and stopping the run, which can take teams a long way.

“It’s quite the challenge,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said on a conference call. “We’re only going to do walk-throughs this week. We’re pretty dinged up, and we don’t have really enough guys to get 11 on 11 right now for look squad (scout team). Most of our look squad guys are going to be playing, so we just got to get them ready to go.”

Sent to injured reserve were guard Shawn Lauvao (stinger), center Spencer Long (knee), wide receiver Terrelle Pryor (ankle) and running back Chris Thompson (fibula). Backup center Chase Roullier (hand) is also out this week.nike_steelers_718
