Saints’ big move up shows they’re all about winning while Brees is in his prime

When the news surfaced that the Saints were trying to make a big move up in the first round of the NFL draft, the initial reaction was that they were looking for a quarterback. Usually when a team moves way up, that’s what they want.

But it wasn’t a quarterback the Saints drafted after they traded their 2019 first-round pick, as well as this year’s fifth-round pick, to the Packers to move from No. 27 to No. 14. Instead, the Saints took a pass rusher, Marcus Davenport.

That’s a strong sign that the Saints are all about winning one more Super Bowl while Drew Brees is in his prime. Trading away a future first-round draft pick is always a risky proposition, and it might very well hamstring the Saints in the long run.

The Saints will have to determine whether Banjo’s value as a backup and special teamer is worth $1.55 million this season. Only $100,000 of that is guaranteed, so if New Orleans decides the value isn’t there, it can release him with little financial penalty.

Conque transitioned from quarterback to tight end with the Texans last year and ended the year on the practice squad. Jones also failed to make the team last summer while Malleck caught one pass for three yards in two regular season games. President had three tackles in four games.

The Texans have not announced any undrafted free agent additions at this point, but that will likely be coming now that they’ve cleared out space on the roster.

Newly signed Anthony Hitchens and Reggie Ragland will hold down the starting jobs on the base defense.

The Eagles announced that the team has agreed to terms on a new contract with the veteran running back.

Earlier this year, Sproles told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport that he was leaning toward returning for a 13th season after breaking his arm and tearing his ACL last season. He expressed his desire to go out on his own terms.
